Gearing up to go kayaking in the San Juan Islands

“ When you taught us about trees it really stuck because I identified a tree for a friend and told him how he could identify them too. You make teaching exciting and next time we go to Rosario, for any reason, I will definitely want to go.”

  Marine Discovery Camp '09

The Puget Sound region provides ample opportunities for adventure. When adventure is combined with learning in the natural world students gain self-confidence and knowledge of their world and the importance of interdependent webs of life. In a world where technology dominates, and our lives are over stimulated, Academic Adventures combines the adventure of trying new things from a slower paced life with learning about the habitats we move through.

This summer we are teaming up with Sunset Lake Camp and the SV Cutty Sark to provide our Marine Discovery Camp.  Dates are June 29 - July 3  (click to register)

Campers on this Adventure filled week will study the marine biology of the Salish Sea in the San Juan Islands.  Not only will they learn about the marine life here but they will also learn to sail a classic ketch rigged sailing vessel - performing all duties of safely conveying the vessel to its nightly destinations.  Each night campers and staff will set up camp in a different part of the San Juan Islands Archipelego.  Andrew Rice, Executive Director of Academic Adventures will be the key science instructor with Capt. John Colby Stone facilitating the sail training elements.  Sunset Lake Camp staff will aid in the daily activities and experiences of the week and seek to draw campers into a closer walk with God.

Campers will: Sail, Navigate, Pilot, Keep Watch, and Learn sailing skills
